December Challenge Question:
When looking at graphs of P-wave and S-wave vs distance, why does the slope of the curve suggest that the waves are speeding up as they travel away from the focus? (Hint: this is a bit of a trick question, having more to do with the way the distance is measured...)

i think the waves appear to be speeding up because they have more time to "get faster." this is just like when you are running and at first you start off slow, but then you speed up and get into a good pace.

P and S waves appear to be speeding up because as the distance increases the speed increases. Distance from the focus /seismic wave speed = travel time. On the graph waves look as if they are speeding up because the distance and time it took to get there are increasing.

I found out that Velocity=Distance/Time. As the wave moves away from the focus, it takes less time to cover the same distance. Therefore, the velocity is increasing, but not at a constant rate (which would have been a straight line).
